People Picker vs User Profile Service

Howdy, I similar some clarification for people picker and User Profile Service. Initially, I assume People Picker information came after configure UPS sync simply it seem like People Picker and UPS are not related.

So I like to ask:

1) What the purpose/usage for UPS and People Picker

2) How does People Picker get it users if it does not chronicle to UPS? By default which domain of users information technology will extract? is it base on which SharePoint Servers domain is using?

3) If i need to include dissimilar AD Domain users, how should i do it in SP2016? It it only can be done in PowerShell?

Answers

1) People Picker is used to select users for authentication and to assign permissions to them. Profiles are used to store data to enrich the user experience.

2) The People Picker gets its info directly from AD. It will get users from the domain that the SharePoint server accounts are in. If Sync is configure and so User Profiles are populated from AD, but that's not a requirement.

3) To add additional Advertizing domains they must be in Trust relationship with the domain that SharePoint is using. And then yous can configure information technology with PowerShell. This commodity has the data. Its for SP2013, just the settings are the same in 2016.

For your questions:
1. A user profile consists of a set of user properties. User Profiles stores users' data and are used to My Sites, Contour pages, People searching, Organizational charts, Expertise search, Social tagging and Audiences.

1. The Advert import selection does not perform bidirectional synchronization. Changes made to SharePoint user profiles will not be synchronized dorsum to the domain controller.
2. If nosotros want People Picker to return query results from more than i forest or domain, we must configure People Picker to use an encrypted account and password.

ane) Profiles store metadata almost a user. For instance, the user's email address, their concrete location, their manager, or their telephone number. Having this data in the User Profile means that Search tin crawl the user contour which volition allow searching for user'south based on information in their profile. Search does non clamber Advert. So unless you sync with Advertizing info that is stored in Advertizing isn't available inside SharePoint. AD is only used for Authentication.

1b) AD sync is but 1 way by default. For SharePoint 2016 you need MIM to configure two way sync (ie. right values dorsum to AD)

2) I hateful the Estimator account that represents the SharePoint server in AD. That's the domain that the server is a member of.
