I have a friend who told me their telephone was shut off, but I dont believe them. I was driving by them the other twenty-four hour period and saw them on the phone. They said they were calling 911 because they saw an accident, and their actually was an blow in the road, simply i thought you lot could non call any numbers when a phone is shut off.
Best Answer - Called by Voters
All phones are capable of dialing 911 fifty-fifty without service. Even cell phones equally long equally they are charged tin punch 911. Many places try to get donations of used cell phones to give to people that may need 1 to call 911 in an emergency only can't afford phone service.

Oh, and don't effort calling 911 from an old cell phone just to encounter if it works. Yep, it does, and they don't demand your not-emergency call taking upward time.

Just had mine shut off as a coin saving measure and mentioned to my daughter that I was just worried nearly not having it for real emergencies while driving. She said it volition all the same work for dialing 911 as long as the battery is charged up. Anyone else ever heard of this?

6. Well that is a really good thing to know
I have been paying for service on the cell phone I have now for over two years just to have it to call 911 in case of an emergency on the road.
That is the only matter I ever employ it for. I was paying for something that was free all along. Damn.
Amazing.

9. What kind of emergency?
An accident yes, but a suspension down? I have hardly ever called 911. Is it ok to call if your machine breaks down on a highway with a period of traffic? Hither in Ca we take telephone call boxes on virtually highways. But I travel sometimes with my 85 year one-time mother and so a break down can exist an emergency I suppose, but is it right to call 911. Only curious.

12. The kind of emergency where my car slides off the road during a blizzard
And no one knows I am there. And there was a run a risk I would freeze to death.
That kind of emergency.
As for a auto breakup if the car stops in the eye of the route somewhere and is blocking traffic that is something the canton police would want to be aware of so they tin come out and put some flares downwardly and call a wrecker.
This is a very rural expanse. No call boxes here. Just corn fields every bit far equally the eye can encounter.
I would not call 911 if my car broke down in a grocery store parking lot. I would just go in and use the payphone to call a mechanic.
Common sense rules.

thirteen. You might desire to consider a prepaid prison cell phone.
There are options that work out as cheap every bit $eight a month, and it gives y'all the added ability to call family, a tow truck, AAA, whatever if you're stranded in Not-life-threatening circumstance.

17. I 2d the prepaid phone notion
I've only e'er used the prepaids on campaigns while phone banking, only for someone like you information technology would be an ideal option.
Payphones are quickly becoming non-existent and are beingness removed on a daily basis.

4. Yep! There was a police force passed sometime ago (don't have the link) that
requires jail cell phone companies to permit 911 calls even if service has been asunder. I don't know virtually the old analogue phones, but information technology'due south supposedly truthful for digital (but I've never tried it.)

5. Aye - that is why when you are out of your own network information technology says "Emergency Calls Only".
So even when you don't accept service with your subscribed network if any other network is available you lot can make a 911 call with that telephone.

8. Doesn't even need to activated
I've gone through 2 Droids in the past month and they both have two options when you take them out of the box, emergency call and actuate.

x. I worked for Verizon Wireless for a number of years and ALL cellphones sold subsequently...
.

.
... a sure date (forget, just it's MAYBE ten years ago) were mandated to have this characteristic. As long as
you tin can keep it charged, yous take an emergency 911 phone.
.
Some kids, knowing this and knowing information technology's impossible (or not worth the resources) to rails them downwards will
prank call 911, cutting down on truthful emergency response calls (also, if yous give an old phone to a toddler
to play with, take the battery out so they don't "accidentally" discover this).
.
.
.
I think endless pizza commitment should be mandated, too.

Cell phones accept ever been bachelor for people that need to make 911 calls. E'er. I've had a cell phone since the early 90'due south. I knew that even if I could non pay for my service, I had 911 available to me.
Discarded phones are a very skillful resource for women who may exist victims of domestic violence because of this.

21. Primal lock, or keypad lock, prevents y'all from being able to dial the phone...
...until you've performed a specific set of actions to "unlock" it, such as pressing 2 widely separated keys correct after each other. That style your phone tin't accidentally dial anyone, even a wrong number, but having the keypad hit.
